Austin Acupuncture and Acupressure - You realize you're paying someone to stick you with needles, right? Our acupuncture and acupressure experts in Austin are more than happy to oblige. Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, acupuncture still remains one of the oldest and most popular natural medicine services.

Oriental Medicine in Austin

The word acupuncture refers to a series of techniques that stimulate anatomical points on the body. Acupuncture practices have compiled the medical practices of China, Japan, Korea, and other countries in the region. The acupuncture needle penetrates and stimulates a series of “points” on the body that are thought to be stagnant or a gathering place for negative energy. The majority of main acupuncture points are commonly found on the “twelve main meridians,” on the “eight extra meridians,” and in a total of “fourteen channels” which are thought to be pathways by which qi or chi and blood flow. One of the most common acupuncture methods that has been assessed by scientists and as practiced in Austin involves penetrating the skin with thin metallic needles that are later managed by the hands or by means of electric stimulation. Although the use of needles might sound scary, it is actually quite therapeutic.

Acupressure in Austin

If you’re not into the whole needle thing, but are still interested in what acupuncture might have to offer, then you may want to check out acupressure. Acupressure is derived from acupuncture and includes applying physical pressure to acupuncture points on the body. It is a great way of receiving the benefits of acupuncture without looking like a porcupine.

Acupuncture in Austin

Before you actually start using acupuncture or acupressure services, it is wise to inform your doctors that you are starting the treatment. If you want to try acupuncture in Austin, it will be important to find a knowledgeable and accredited practitioner.

Acupuncture is based on the belief that qi (vital energy) flows through the body along a network of paths, called meridians. Qi is said to affect a person’s spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical condition. According to TCM, qi has two forces, yin and yang. Yin and yang are opposite forces that work together to form a whole. The forces of yin and yang depend on each other and are made from each other in an unending cycle, such as hot and cold, day and night, and health and disease. Nothing is ever all yin or all yang, both exist in all things, including people. Many of the major organs of the body are believed to be yin-yang pairs that must be in balance to be healthy. When a person's yin and yang are not in balance, qi can become blocked. Blocked qi causes pain, illness, or other health problems. TCM uses acupuncture, diet, herbal therapy, meditation, physical exercise, and massage to restore health by unblocking qi and correcting the balance of yin and yang within the person.
