Amusement parks are where you find $15 hot dogs and rides that can make you sick. I went to Yuma, AZ and won a stuffed animal, but lost my dignity in the process. However, if you are looking for screams and excitement and don't mind the nausea, there are plenty of places to choose from.
Yuma, AZ Theme Parks
What better way to spend a day than to hike 6 miles from your car to the entrance of a local Yuma, AZ amusement park, and pay $87 per person, spend $17 on a hot dog and $9 on a soda, then hurl that $26 meal all over the place because you went on an upside-down roller coaster too soon after you ate? Seriously though, you're going to love it. You will love it even if you spend the rest of your day nauseous. You can’t leave because you already spent a month's worth of rent getting your family through the gate and your kids will cry for a week if you leave before the gates close.
Eventually, your kids were able to convince you to get on another ride. “It’s just a river raft,” they say. “Nothing spinning or looping, just enjoy the scenery.” Now, it’s 10 p.m. and you’re freezing, because you went under a waterfall and you’re drenched from head to foot. You finally get to leave, but your shoes are filled with water, you still feel like you’re going to throw up, and you still have a 6 mile trek in front of you. Sweet.
Yuma, AZ Zoos
You might be thinking that you should spend your outing at the zoo. This is where you get to see animals you wouldn't normally encounter, hating their lives, dreaming of extinction. My first time at the Yuma, AZ zoo when I was a kid was so exciting. I saw a lion hunting for zebras. I thought seeing the blood and carnage was going to be awesome. Then we got there. The lions were getting a vet checkup or something, so they couldn't be viewed, and they didn't even have zebras. And since it was it was around 80 degrees that day, all the other animals were just lying there, if they were even visible. The Yuma, AZ zoo is lame.

When I was a kid, the Yuma, AZ amusement park was the center. It still is, I suppose, but people don't go there like they used to. The rides and roller-coasters, with their themed tourist trap attractions spread all over the concrete jungle so much you couldn't find the entrance to one ride or another, were bigger, faster, and more dangerous. At least they felt that way to a kid who just got tall enough to feel tall enough to step over that line and lock the bar down on those skinny legs. Fun for a kid had nothing to do with any particular events or culture. It had to do with adrenaline adventures and sugar rushes that made your eyes glaze over until all you could do was drool the colors of the rainbow in sticky, sweet, and sour liquids...and hope that your parents remembered the map because you couldn't move without wanting to throw up.
Yuma, AZ Water Slide
Every summer the water slide was the most anticipated event of my family vacation. I remember how big the water slides seemed when I was young--standing on top of a a slide that was only 50 feet tall seemed like I was teetering on the edge of a skyscraper. The Yuma, AZ water park is most known for it's huge inner tube course. My favorite part was when the teenage girl lifeguards would pick my up and help me into the inner tube. Probably the most displeasing part of this water slide was the unavoidable wedgies I would get after free-falling 50 feet straight down the slide. It was always embarrassing having to pick my swimming shorts out of my butt. I have to say, however, that the staff at Yuma, AZ water slide are great and I'm not just saying that because of the cute girls. They all seem like very well trained life guards and keep a trained eye out for any danger. The food at water slide isn't as nice but I'll take the good with the bad. A hot dog is a hot dog right? Although I love all water slides, the slides at this particular water park are my favorite and I can't wait to go back!
